Instructions / Guidance for volunteer running the CLOCK

Clock starts when the first player touches the ball after the tip-off.

Possession arrow changes to the team that did NOT get possession from the tip off. It will stay that way until a tie (jump) ball. After the ball is thrown in, the arrow changes to the other team. It will change AFTER each tie ball. It will also change after the ball is thrown in at the beginning of each quarter.

Clock runs continuously until the REFEREE calls time out for a shooting foul or team time out. The referee must tell you when the time out is, NOT the coach. It does NOT stop for an out-of-bounds ball at any time. If there is a disagreement, the clock runs until the referee tells you to stop it. After a time out, the clock will remain off until a PLAYER ON THE COURT touches the ball after it has been thrown in. If a player knocks it out of bounds when it is thrown in, it will stay on.

On a shooting or 1 and 1 foul, the clock will stop while they line up. The clock starts when a player touches the ball after a missed shot on a 1 and 1 or after the missed second shot on a shooting foul. If the shot is made, the clock stays off. It will start again when a PLAYER ON THE COURT touches the ball AFTER it has been thrown in.

It is the scorekeeper's responsibility to notify the clock scorer and referee when the next foul will be a 1 and 1 foul. When the referee calls the foul, either push the horn button or notify the referee that it is a 1 and 1 foul.

Each quarter is set for 8 minutes.

A free throw is worth 1 point, made basket is 2 points and a three point shot is worth 3 points. The referee will hold up both hands to indicate a 3 point shot. If there is any doubt, ask the ref.

At the end of each quarter, check with the scorekeeper to make sure you both have the same score.

REMINDER
You are part of the referee crew. There is to be NO COACHING or talking except to the referee and scorekeeper. Be courteous and IMPARTIAL.
