Frequently Asked Questions

League Operations:
Q:   Does my child have to try out to make a team?
A:   As long as we have room in the league (which is first come first serve), everyone will be placed on a team. There are tryouts held but that is for the purpose of drafting players and trying to make teams as even as possible. Please make every possible effort to have your child be at their scheduled tryout or makeup tryout.

Q:   If my child has not played basketball before or is not athletic, should we sign him/her up?
A:   YES! This league has all different levels of play and we encourage you to sign your children up if they want to learn basketball.

Q:   This is my child's first year, so can he/she play with a younger group?
A:   No, we generally do not allow this.

Q:   Can my child play with an older group?
A:   We allow this on a case by case basis

Q:   What if I sign my child up and he/she decides they don't want to play; what is the refund policy?
A:   If they withdraw prior to the start of the season, we retain $25.00 for expense reimbursement. If the withdrawal is after the season starts, there is no refund.

Q:   What if I sign my child up and he/she qualifies for the school team?
A:   All monies concerning that child will be refunded 100%.

Q:   Can my child play if he/she is on the school team?
A:   No. If your child makes the school team, he/she may not play in our league.

Q:   When are the games played?
A:   For the younger kids, we do our best to play most games on Saturdays. Older kids will have more weeknight games.

Q:   Where are the games played?
A:   Games are played at Fort Bend ISD schools

Q:   How long is the season
A:   Games begin in November and go through March. We have a ten (10) game season and then playoffs (for all ages 6 and up). 5 year olds have a ten (10) game season with no playoffs.

Q:   How is the money from the registration fee spent?
A:   All money is spent on the league, including but not limited to gym space rental, uniforms, equipment and awards

Q:   What does the league provide?
A:   We provide uniforms and awards for all players. We also provide team balls. The league has trained certified referees as well.

Volunteer:
Q:   Who are the coaches?
A:   Coaches are mostly made up of volunteer parents. If you want to coach, please let us know. We have some volunteer high school students that coach some of the younger teams as well.

Q:   Are background checks performed on adults that directly interact with the children?
A:   Yes, Checks are performed on all coaches.

Team Information/Qualification:
Q:   How/when will I know what team my child will play for?
A:   Your child will participate in a tryout. The schedule for the tryouts will be posted on the website. Thereafter, the coach that selects your child will call you with instructions.

Q:   Will there be coed teams?
A:   In the 5 year old division only.

Q:   When and where are practices held?
A:   Times and locations for practices are scheduled by each individual coach. This year the league is trying to schedule weekly practices at FBISD schools. This is dependent on the amount of funds the league can generate through sponsorships and donations from parents.

Q:   My child is a beginner, so how much playing time will he/she receive?
A:   We have specific rules calling for generally equal playing time for all children in the league.

Q:   Can my child be placed with his previous coach?
A:   Each year we have separate drafts. We do our best to try to make teams even. We therefore do not allow placement with coaches.

Q:   Can my child be placed on the same team with his/her friend?
A:   For the same reasons as above, this is not allowed.

Q:   Why doesn't the league provide a gym for practice?
A:   This will be the first year that the league will try to get weekly practice time for teams at FBISD schools. Once again this depends on the league generating enough extra funds to pay for the extra gym time. This will be done through sponsorships and donations from parents at registration.

Playoffs:
Q:  How are the play-offs determined ?
A:  Based upon regular season records. First, overall records control. If there is a tie in record, we look at head to head meetings between the tied teams. If it is still tied, we do a coin flip.

Q:  Play-offs - what's the procedure for the coin flip ?
A:  Two (2) board members will be present to witness the flip.
